2026 Toyota GRMN Corolla Preview
There are hot hatches, and then there are cars built with little regard for compromise. The 2026 Toyota GRMN Corolla falls firmly into the latter category. Developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing as the most focused GR Corolla to date, it trades rear seats for weight savings, sharpens every aspect of the chassis, and backs it all up with a 300-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder, a 6-speed intelligent Manual Transmission, and Toyota's GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system. From its carbon-fibre body panels to its adjustable rear wing and track-ready Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, every change serves a purpose. Read on as our team at James Toyota in Timmins, Ontario breaks down everything we know so far about the 2026 Toyota GRMN Corolla ahead of its Canadian arrival later this year.
What Is the GRMN Corolla?
GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nürburgring, Toyota's designation for the highest tier of road-going performance vehicles developed directly through motorsport.
Where the GR Corolla is a performance-focused production car, the GRMN Corolla is a vehicle developed through actual Super Taikyu Series endurance racing and intensive Nürburgring test sessions, with the explicit goal of being able to lap the world's most demanding circuit properly.
The project originated from Toyota Master Driver Akio Toyoda, known as Morizo, who began his driving career at the Nürburgring and directed the GR team to develop a Corolla that could run it confidently at full pace.
The result is a vehicle that carries Morizo's personal signature on the instrument panel and a GRMN-exclusive serial number plate on every unit produced.
2026 Toyota GRMN Engine & Powertrain
| Specification | Detail |
| Engine | G16E-GTS 1.6L 3-cylinder turbocharged, port injected |
| Maximum Horsepower | 300 hp @ 6,500 rpm |
| Maximum Torque | 302 lb-ft @ 3,250–4,600 rpm |
| Transmission | 6-speed iMT with rev-matching |
| Driveline | GR-FOUR All-Wheel-Drive |
| Compression Ratio | 10.5:1 |
| Displacement | 1,618 cc |
The torque increase to 302 pound-feet, up from the base GR Corolla, came specifically from analyzing the rpm range most used during circuit driving. The GR team focused on building torque in the 4,000–4,600 rpm mid-speed range, which is the range that matters most when accelerating out of corners.
To maintain stable output during continuous full-throttle running, the GRMN Corolla adds an intercooler spray system, drawing from knowledge gained running the hydrogen engine-powered GR Corolla in Super Taikyu endurance racing, where sustained high-load operation exposes thermal limitations that normal test cycles never reveal.
The close-ratio 6-speed iMT with rev-matching is the only transmission offered. There is no automatic option. Gear ratios are stacked tightly for performance driving, with a short first gear at 3.214 and a relatively direct top gear at 0.902.
2026 Toyota GRMN Chassis & Suspension
The GRMN Corolla uses exclusive front and rear monotube shock absorbers, inverted at the front, upright at the rear, both featuring internal rebound springs for improved inner-wheel traction during cornering.
The Nürburgring's surface delivers vertical suspension travel far beyond what typical test tracks produce, and the GR team optimized bump-stop characteristics through extensive circuit running, adjusting shock absorber stroke down to the millimetre front and rear.
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires in 245/40ZR18 sizing are standard, one of the most capable semi-slick road tires available, the same compound used on many dedicated track day cars. Braking is handled by 14-inch ventilated discs with 4-piston calipers at the front and 11.7-inch ventilated discs with 2-piston calipers at the rear.
The GR-FOUR AWD control system received exclusive tuning for the GRMN, optimized for rear torque distribution during straight-line driving and calibrated for enhanced stability at the onset of steering input at extremely high speeds. The electric power steering control program was also specifically retuned to generate the correct amount of assistance torque even under high cornering g-forces.
2026 Toyota GRMN Aerodynamics
The GRMN Corolla's aerodynamic package came directly from competition experience:
- Carbon-fibre hood with integrated hood duct
- Carbon-fibre front fenders with fender ducts
- Carbon-fibre front side spoilers
- Carbon-fibre rear wing with a five-step angle adjustment mechanism — fine-tuned in 1-degree increments during Nürburgring test runs with professional drivers to find the optimal specification
All four aerodynamic components are carbon-fibre as standard. The approach angle, rear wing adjustment range, and duct placement were developed from the hydrogen GR Corolla's Super Taikyu Series competition program.
2026 Toyota GRMN Weight Reduction & Two-Seat Configuration
The most dramatic departure from the base GR Corolla is the removal of the rear seats. The GRMN Corolla is a strict two-seater with the rear bench eliminated as part of a comprehensive weight reduction program that brought the vehicle to 1,460 kilograms, a 30-kilogram reduction over the base car.
Combined with the carbon-fibre body panels, the weight saving directly improves the power-to-weight ratio and contributes to more responsive chassis behavior at the limits.
2026 Toyota GRMN Interior & Cockpit
The cockpit reflects the GRMN's driver-first philosophy:
- Semi-bucket sport seats upholstered in black and red Brin Naub suede and synthetic leather with strong lateral support
- Flocked instrument panel and front pillar trim to reduce reflections and improve driver focus
- Carbon ornament on the passenger-side instrument panel, manufactured at Toyota's Motomachi Plant carbon division
- Instrument panel with Morizo's personal signature
- GRMN-exclusive serial number plate
- Door trim and shift knob accented in Alumite red
- Cast iron black paint on interior accents
