What Types of Tires are Available?

All-Season Tires

Generally speaking, most new vehicles sold in Canada come equipped with a set of all-season tires. As their name suggests, these tires are designed to provide adequate amounts of on-road traction across all four seasons. Although these tires perform well in most driving conditions, they do not provide the thrilling handling and optimal grip of summer performance tires, nor do they have the traction required for tackling serious winter road conditions.

Winter Tires

Winter tires are specifically engineered to provide optimal amounts of traction during the cold winter months. Unlike all-seasons, winter tires are produced using specialized rubber compounds that remain soft in cold weather conditions, as well as specialized tread patterns that are designed to maintain grip on slick surfaces. These features all result in heightened traction and enhanced control on snow and ice-covered roads. As such, these tires perform great during the cold winter months, but must be changed out once the warm weather returns in order to avoid unnecessary wear and tear.

Summer Tires

Automotive enthusiasts who are looking to get the most out of their vehicle’s handling and performance will want to equip their vehicle with summer tires. When compared to all-season and winter tires, these tires are typically wider, feature less grooving, and are made out of more flexible materials. The additional rubber contact allows for enhanced cornering, speed, and agility, but it makes these tires less than ideal in cold weather, as well as uneven road conditions.

How Long Do Tires Last?

The useful life of automotive tires depends on a handful of factors including; how often they get used, the type of driving that they see (i.e. aggressive or gentle), as well as the conditions that they’re used in. As a general rule of thumb, all-season tires last between three to five years, or about 90,000 to 135,000 kilometres worth of travel for the average driver. However, most vehicle experts suggest that drivers change their vehicle’s tires after a decade of purchase, regardless of use.

Winter tires typically last about three or four years on average, assuming drivers are only using them in the conditions they were intended for. Similarly, summer tires don’t typically last as long as their all-season counterparts and will likely need to be replaced after up to four years of occasional use.

Taking Care of Your Tires

Once your new tires are securely installed onto your vehicle, it’s important to practice proper tire care to ensure they last as long as possible. On a monthly basis, drivers should be sure to check their tire pressure to ensure they’re properly inflated. Similarly, drivers should take their vehicle in to get their tires rotated every six months to make sure that each tire gets an even amount of wear.
